While Spring may have yet fully “sprung,” it is springing. And Spring is a time that brings about many happy sights and sounds.
We think of the buzzing of bees and birds chirping as the quintessential soundtrack of the season. And the album art for that soundtrack would, of course, have to be blooming flowers or even blossoming fruit trees! But for Mowing R Us, nothing says Spring like scents: the scents of spring mowing.
Getting our mowers ready lets us know Spring is almost here in Mckinney!
That’s the Smell of Opportunity!
Gasoline and grass clippings may not be lining up behind Old Spice and Calvin Klien as cologne and aftershave candidates, but if the scent is the portal to memories, few scents bring up better ones!
We love this time of year! There’s so much opportunity for you to improve your property’s beauty and health. And while much of that is adding new installations, there’s plenty of room for lawn maintenance.
So today, we’re sharing everything you need to maintain a healthy lawn.
Spring Mowing (of Course!)
Though lawn maintenance is much more than mowing, it is a large chunk of what it takes to keep your lawn healthy and trim. Spring mowing is similar to mowing the rest of the year, but there are a couple of differences to keep in mind.
The First Cut
As you begin spring mowing, your lawn will have been dormant for the winter. As a result, the ends of your grass probably aren’t looking great. Much like waiting too long for a haircut, you may need to remove a little extra to trim the “split ends.”
So, your first spring mowing will be slightly shorter than the rest of the season.
Cool or Warm Season Grass
Different species of grass have different needs. But all species can be divided into two categories: warm-season and cool-season grasses. Though our climate is usually very warm, Texas has warm and cool season grasses.
The cool season grasses are what are entering their primary growth stage. So, for example, cool-season grasses can generally be left a little longer than warm-season grasses.
Time of the Season for Cutting
This time of year, you can cut all your grass slightly shorter. As the weather warms, your grass will need more height to insulate it from the sun’s rays. Cutting it short will scalp it.
Scalping grass is allowing it to burn because of a shortcut. It’s like letting your lawn get a sunburn, but in the grass, it can be deadly.
Edging Matters Too
Mowing is just one of the tasks needing to be completed as we begin the spring mowing season. One of the differences between a lawn that looks fine and a lawn that looks stunning is a prominent edge.
We edge grass by creating a shallow and narrow indentation around the perimeter of your lawn. Like eyeliner makes the eyes stand out, edging makes your lawn pop – but edging also has practical benefits.
When you edge your lawn, it helps to contain it. With a trench in the way, your grass roots are less likely to cross over into your gardens or, worse, your hardscaping.
Lastly, edging makes mowing easier. The edge keeps your lawn uniform, requiring less detailed work after a mow.
Trimming – That Detail Work
Trimming is what we do after we mow. It’s the process of getting all those little details we may have missed.
Because your ground isn’t perfectly even, and because there are obstacles in the way of it, like decorative stones, gardens, and more, sometimes stray grass gets missed. However, we aren’t content leaving you with a lawn that isn’t perfect, so Mowing R Us surveys the property for any of these spots and trims the excess away.
Blow Outs (No Tires, No Travolta)
Finally, once we’ve finished mowing and trimming your lawn, there’s one last step to get your property camera-ready – blowouts.
You don’t need to tell us that mowing can be messy. There’s a reason landscapers change their clothes before going out to dinner! But your lawn maintenance isn’t done until the mess is cleaned up.
So we go over your yard and hardscape to ensure no stray grass clippings have migrated into your space and blow them out for a clean, finished look.
